Assigning Homework and Providing Practice:
TED-Ed
Many of us recognize TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) as the “Ideas Worth Spreading” website full of interesting and innovative video presentations. If you haven’t checked it out before, it is definitely worth a look. TED Talks feature engaging speakers and cover a wide-range of topics. In efforts to expand their educational offerings TED recently launched two education initiatives designed to help teachers use video in the classroom.
In spring 2012, TED launched a YouTube channel which quickly attracted more than 2.4 million views, 24,0000 subscribers, and more than 3000 comments. Click here to visit the TEDEducation YouTube channel.
TED's newest site, TED-Ed, is a platform that allows users the ability to use or modify existing lessons featured on the site. In addition, users can create customized lessons from scratch based on any video from YouTube. These lessons can then be distributed publicly or privately, and users can track the impact the lesson has on a class or an individual student.
The site allows teachers to browse content based on the subject they teach. All videos are tagged to a curriculum subject and are accompanied by supplementary resources. A free registration is required in order to access all of the site features. For more information view the TED-Ed Web Tour at the bottom of this page.
