Setting Objectives and Providing Feedback
A Dilemma (2008) by Julie Manzerova on Flickr.
These strategies direct learning by making expectations clear for learning as well as monitoring individual progress towards the learning goal.
Without clear objectives, students will have difficulty self-monitoring and self-reflecting on their progress.
However, objectives (outcomes) need to be clear with set indicators to establish if the outcome has been met.

Setting ObjectivesSaskatchewan Curriculum utilizes the terminology "outcomes" and "indicators". Students need to understand the indicators to accomplish the general outcome - "unpack".
1. Set learning objectives that are specific but not restrictive. 2. Communicate the learning objectives to students and parents. 3. Connect the learning objectives to previous and future learning. 4. Engage students in setting personal learning objectives. 5. Learning objectives should reflect what students need to learn, not the activity or assignment they are completing. This helps to establish acquisition of knowledge, rather than performance competition, as the central goal. Resources for Objectives Classroom Web Spaces |
Providing FeedbackThe goal of feedback should be to improve student performance and understanding of themselves as learners.
1. Provide feedback that identifies the success but also elaborates to include direction on next steps. 2. Feedback is timely to meet student needs. 3. Criterion referenced feedback (rubrics, specific information to improve performance). 4. Include the student in the feedback process.
