Global Collaboration Projects
Clear expecations, set roles, timelines, and division of work become even more important in global collaboration projects. These projects are also extremely rewarding by providing students with real-world applications and audience for their work.
Alan November highlighted the unique extensions possible in his Digital Learning Farm metaphor for cooperative learning roles. Each of these roles are designed to facilitate student participation that leads to valuable contributions to their learing community. Students can help build "legacy projects" through collaboration which would extend from one year to the next. Some of these roles included:
- tutorial designers
- official scribes
- researchers
- collabortion coordinators
- contributing to society
- curriculum reviewers
Silvia Rosenthal Tolisano uses these roles frequently to connect globally with various projects in her school. She has shared her list of iPad applications that are used by students in these different roles when employing the Digital Learning Farm model for cooperative learning in her classroom.
Finally, the Global Competency Matrix is an excellent resource for outcomes related to the knowledge, skills, and dispositions required by students to act on issues of global significance.
